Everything on the farm is open to critical review in light of permaculture design, from where to locate various gardens based on topography or microclimate to how buildings are used and powered. The central point for this permaculture farm, Frey states, is the bioshelter, “a greenhouse operated as an ecosystem.” He likens the bioshelter to a living cell that breathes and replenishes itself from its environment, producing food and wastes in the process. More than just a glassed-in hothouse, the bioshelter contains multiple microclimates and encourages ecological relationships between the plants and beneficial insects as well as chickens and humans.
